8 parks and playgrounds in Istanbul for babies and toddlers
Where Istanbul families take their little ones: big green parks, seaside playgrounds and shady spots for a picnic and a nap.
Parks and playgrounds in Istanbul are where you'll meet the city's families, especially on weekend afternoons. After a morning of mosques and bazaars, an hour on a slide and a lawn does wonders for a toddler, and for parents. Here are eight places we recommend, spread across both sides of the city.
Parks and playgrounds in Istanbul: European side
1. Gülhane Park (Sultanahmet)
Right next to Topkapı Palace. Old plane trees, wide paths and a small playground make it the best break in the old city. Paths are mostly smooth and gently sloped.
2. Yıldız Park (Beşiktaş)
A large, shady park climbing up from the Bosphorus. Lovely for picnics, but steep: enter from the top on Palanga Street if you can, and walk downhill.
3. Maçka Park (Nişantaşı)
A green valley between Nişantaşı and Beşiktaş with a playground, long paths and cafés. Good for families staying in Şişli or Taksim.
4. Emirgan Park (Sarıyer)
One of the city's most beautiful parks, with ponds, pavilions and huge lawns. Famous for tulips in April. The lower part near the shore is the flattest.
5. Belgrad Forest (Sarıyer)
A real forest on the city's edge, with a flat gravel path around the lake. A sturdy stroller or a wagon handles it well.
Parks and playgrounds on the Asian side
6. The coastal park from Moda to Caddebostan (Kadıköy)
Kilometres of seaside lawns, playgrounds, bike paths and cafés. Our favourite for a whole afternoon. Stay on the main path; it's wide and flat.
7. Fenerbahçe Park
A green headland with old trees, a lighthouse and calm seaside paths. Quieter than Moda on weekdays.
8. Göztepe 60. Yıl Park
A big neighbourhood park with several playgrounds, a pond and plenty of shade. A local favourite.
Tips for park days with little ones
- Playgrounds have soft flooring in newer parks, but older ones are on gravel or concrete; check before letting toddlers loose.
- Bring wipes and a change of clothes: toddlers find every puddle.
- Public toilets exist in larger parks; changing tables are rare.
- Many parks have a small café selling tea, simit and juice.
For opening hours and events, the city council lists its parks on the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality site. A comfortable stroller makes park days easy; see also our guide to stroller-friendly areas.
Combining parks with sightseeing
The trick with parks and playgrounds in Istanbul is to pair each one with a nearby sight, so children get a reward after the "boring" part. Topkapı Palace goes with Gülhane Park, which is right next door. Dolmabahçe Palace or the Naval Museum goes with a walk along the shore to Yıldız Park. A ferry to Kadıköy goes with an afternoon in the coastal park at Moda. On the upper Bosphorus, a fish lunch in Emirgan goes with an hour on the park's lawns. Plan the day around these pairs and you'll find toddlers walk further, nap better and complain less. Parents get a coffee on a bench while the kids play, which is a small holiday in itself.
Weekday mornings are the quietest time for playgrounds; Saturday and Sunday afternoons are busy and lively, which some children love.

Yes, public playgrounds in city parks are free. Some parks charge a small fee for parking.
